Because I am a Girl Fund

BIIAG logo 2010

Because I am a Girl is a global movement to highlight the silent emergency of gender discrimination in the developing world which traps girls in a cycle of poverty and inequality.

With Plan Ireland’s Because I am a Girl Fund, you are helping the world’s most vulnerable and neglected group – girls. We know that, given the chance, girls will break out of poverty, support their families and encourage their communities to develop alongside them.

Your contribution will be invested in effective global projects which address and promote equality for girls.  Currently Plan’s work with girls includes setting up girl-friendly schools in Togo, freeing slave girls in Nepal and establishing female genital cutting prevention programmes in Guinea.

You will receive a yearly Because I am a Girl report so you can see exactly how your donations are making an impact.

The Silent Emergency of gender discrimination

• Girls are 3 times more likely to suffer from malnutrition, because their family feeds their brothers first

• 70% of all people living on less than $1 per day are female

• Each year 2 million girls between the ages of 5 - 15 are trafficked, sold or coerced into the sex trade

We know there are solutions. Unlock her potential.

Because I am a girl…when I learn, I earn. Just one extra year in school can increase my wages by 20%.

Because I am a girl…if I am educated, when I grow up I am more likely to give birth to a healthy baby, immunise my child and make sure my sons and daughters go to school.

Because I am a girl…I am the solution.

girl friendly schools fundraising What is a Girl Friendly School?

Girls often miss out on education either because they are kept home to look after younger siblings or they fear corporal punishment or lack of hygiene and sanitation facilities.

The Girl Friendly Schools Project is designed to make schools more attractive to girls by addressing these issues and by changing community attitudes to the value of educating girls. An integral part of this project is that it interacts with local communities to bring about these changes.

The project includes the provision of separate girls’ toilet and washing facilities and a community child-minding facility will also be provided to free up girls from child-minding duties.
