Plan aid is reaching quake victims

Plan is distributing 18,000 meals a day in Haiti and has distributed over 4,000 tents and 6,000 family survival kits containing food, water purification tablets, tarpaulin sheets, soap, flash lights, cups and plates.

Long term plans

Plan is also now developing longer-term initiatives and has brought in experts in education, health, engineering, water and sanitation, psycho-social support and logistics to coordinate these initiatives.

In Port au Prince Plan is training community volunteers to help children cope with emotional trauma and physical injuries. In Jacmel crews of unemployed youths are being hired to help remove rubble.

Sanitation is a huge concern in the makeshift tent cities, so Plan is building latrines and installing water and sanitation facilities.

To get children back to school as soon as possible Plan is bringing in large tents for use as temporary classrooms. Plan is part of a group of NGOs assessing the extent of damage to schools and the number of teachers available.

Helping children overcome trauma

Plan is also helping children to overcome the trauma of the earthquake. More than 300 children have joined Plan’s therapeutic games clubs in child-safe zones established by Plan to provide children with a break from the misery of life on the rubble strewn streets. Read More...
